Cambodia Nightclub Fire: Eight people died in a fire at a nightclub in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh on Saturday (July 1). According to a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), six Chinese citizens and two Vietnamese citizens were among the victims of the fire.
Phnom Penh’s local police said a fire was reported at 6969 nightclub in Phnom Penh city at around 5 pm local time on Saturday. The victims were trapped on the top floor of the five-storey building. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
454 accidents in a year
According to the report of foreign news agency AFP, it took several hours to extinguish the fire. Preliminary investigation by the police states that the fire broke out due to a short circuit. The incident in Phnom Penh follows a casino fire on the Thai-Cambodian border in December last year, in which 26 people were killed. The fire at the Grand Diamond City Hotel Casino was caused by an electrical short circuit.
According to the National Disaster Management Committee, Cambodia recorded 454 fire accidents nationwide in the year 2022, in which 42 people died and 55 others were injured.
delay in extinguishing the fire
According to Kun Kim, vice chairman of the National Committee for Disaster Management, some of the victims died of burns, some died of lack of oxygen, and some were trapped in the exits of the casino complex and died.
Vice President Kun Kim also said that officials took too long to extinguish the fire, attributing it to the complex layout of the casino and a lack of rescue machines.
