Corona Period: The effect of corona virus is still visible in many countries of the world including India. An increase is being seen in the cases. Researchers are still studying how SARS-CoV-2 affects the body. At present, a new analysis has revealed that people who were on ventilators during Kovid-19 infection may have had secondary bacterial infection which could have caused their death.
It is noteworthy that during corona virus Secondary bacterial infection of the lungs (pneumonia) was common in people infected with it, requiring ventilators. Researchers used machine learning to detect secondary bacterial pneumonia. This is a form of Artificial Intelligence. Regarding this, the team of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine has published findings in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
What has been said in the investigation?
“We aimed to determine the contribution of unsuccessful treatment of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) to mortality in patients with severe pneumonia,” the investigation said. Along with this, doctors have also found that cytokine storm is considered to be the cause of death in Kovid-19, but it is not so. Cytokine storm means excessive inflammation that leads to organ failure affecting the lungs, kidneys and brain.”
“Our research highlights the importance of preventing, detecting, and treating secondary bacterial pneumonia in patients with severe pneumonia, including COVID-19,” senior author Benjamin Singer said in a statement.
The team analyzed 585 patients
The research team analyzed 585 patients kept in the ICU of Northwest Memorial Hospital. These patients had severe pneumonia and severe breathing difficulties. Out of these, the Kovid test of 190 patients was positive. The team developed a new machine learning approach called Carpedium.
Benjamin Singer said, “Those who recovered from secondary pneumonia were more likely to survive, but those whose pneumonia did not resolve were more likely to die. Our data suggested that the death rate related to the virus is relatively low.
