West Bengal Violence: Mamta government has got a big blow from the Supreme Court in the case of violence during the Ramnavami procession in West Bengal this year. The Supreme Court has upheld the order of the Calcutta High Court. The High Court had ordered the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to hand over the investigation.
The state government challenged this order of the Calcutta High Court in the Supreme Court. The court refused to consider the petition of the West Bengal government. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra clearly said that we are not inclined to consider the Special Leave Petition (SLP).
The state government had criticized the HC order
In fact, the West Bengal government criticized the High Court’s order to transfer the investigation to the NIA, saying that no explosives were used and the direction was passed politically. The petition was filed on behalf of Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the state assembly.
High court order on violence case
On April 27, the High Court had ordered an NIA probe into the incidents of violence during and after the Ram Navami celebrations at Shibpur in Howrah and Rishra in Hooghly districts. The order was passed on the officer’s public interest litigation and three other petitions. In which an NIA inquiry was demanded into the violence at both these places.
The Calcutta High Court had directed the state police to ensure that all FIRs, documents, seized material and CCTV footage are handed over to the NIA within two days.
