Karnataka Assembly Elections 2023: With the assembly elections to be held in Karnataka in the next few days, now the Election Commission has also come into action mode. In fact, in the midst of the state’s election campaign, an audio clip is becoming quite viral on social media, in which a BJP leader is being asked to withdraw the candidature by offering money to the JDS party candidate. Taking a strict stand on this audio, the Election Commission has given instructions to register an FIR against the BJP candidate.
BJP candidate V Somana has contested from Chamarajanagar assembly seat in Karnataka and JDS candidate Mallikarjuna Swamy is also in the fray for the same seat. The viral audio claims that before the elections, the BJP leader tried to persuade her to withdraw her candidature. On which an FIR under section 1860 of the IPC has been registered against Somna at Chamrajnagar town police station after ECI’s advice.

BJP candidate from Chamarajanagar Assembly seat V Somana asked Mallikarjuna Swamy of JDS party to withdraw from the election. In return, Somana offered money and a government vehicle to JDS candidate Swamy. After this audio went viral, the Election Commission has taken this action against the BJP candidate by the Chief Polling Officer of Karnataka. The Election Commission said that it will not tolerate any kind of malpractice during the assembly elections. Along with this, the Election Commission has instructed the Karnataka CEO to increase vigilance.

BJP candidates can also be disqualified
The ECI said, the Election Commission shows no tolerance towards any attempt to bribe or intimidation of candidates and voters in Karnataka elections 2023. He has asked the CEO and DEO officer to keep a close watch on social media for timely action. In this case, an FIR has been registered under Section 1860 of the IPC in Chamaraja Nagar Police Station.
The statement issued said that the Election Commission of India has taken seriously the matter in which an audio clip is being circulated on social media. Moreover, the Election Commission will take strict action against any such corrupt practices in the ongoing Karnataka Assembly Elections 2023.
BJP leader under section 171E and 171F of IPC, 1860 and section 123 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 for corrupt practices leading to cancellation of election and also disqualification of the candidate under section 8(1)(a) can be done.
