‘The accused were under the influence of the demon called caste’: Madras High Court on Dalit youth Gokulraj’s murder

Gokulraj Murder Case: Many cases of harassment and murder in the name of caste come to light from different parts of the country. A few years ago, a similar case came to light from Tamil Nadu, where some upper caste people killed Gokulraj, an engineering student, just because they suspected that he was having an affair with a woman from their caste. Now the Madras High Court has made an important comment in this matter. Upholding the sentence, the High Court said that the accused were under the influence of a demon called caste.

High Court upheld the decision
In this case, a court in Madurai had convicted 10 accused and sentenced them to life imprisonment. After this, the Madras High Court was approached on behalf of the accused, but the High Court also upheld the decision of the lower court and said that there is no deficiency in this decision, hence it cannot be overturned.

Expressing concern over the killing in the name of caste, the High Court said, “This is a case which brings out the dark side of human behaviour. It focuses our attention on the ugly aspects of our society, which include the caste system, bigotry, Inhuman treatment of marginalized people etc.”

The sentence of two accused has been reduced by the High Court, instead of life imprisonment, they have been sentenced to 5 years. On behalf of the Madras High Court, it was said that all the evidence in this case was closely examined and the court was not influenced by any public sentiments or news published in the media. The court said that there is no place for moral conviction in criminal matters.

What is the whole matter?
In fact, Gokulraj, an engineering student, went missing on June 23, 2015, and was last seen with a woman in a temple. After this, his headless dead body was found on the side of the railway track. A suicide note was also found with the dead body, which made it seem like a case of suicide. However, the post-mortem revealed that death was due to strangulation. After which a case of murder was registered.

After this, when the police started the investigation, it was found that Gokulraj had a relationship with a woman from the Gounder community, due to which she was murdered. The upper caste people didn’t like that a Dalit youth had a relationship with a woman from their community, that’s why he was murdered. The police said in the charge sheet that the accused forced the young man to write a suicide note. On the basis of this charge sheet, 10 accused were convicted and sentenced.
