Indian Army Plantation: The Indian Army has started a massive tree plantation drive in the cold and dry desert of Ladakh in the Himalayas. It has been started as a Green India initiative. It started with a tree plantation campaign from 21 April 2023 under the leadership of the Ladakh-based Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army.

The drive by Indian Army’s Leh Sub Area Headquarters in collaboration with local community members, Go Green Go Organic NGO and Forest Department of UT Ladakh has successfully completed the first phase of the tree plantation drive. The campaign was inaugurated by the General Officer Commanding, Leh Sub Area on 21 April and more than 5,000 saplings were planted on the banks of the Indus River in Fay village, Phayang village, Spituk village and near Leh.

40 thousand saplings have been planted

According to the Indian Army, the campaign is being carried out in two phases and in the first phase, 40,000 saplings were planted from Lamayuru to Karu. At the same time, in the second phase, 40,000 saplings will be planted from Nyoma to Koyul area of ​​Ladakh region. If seen in this way, a total of 80 thousand saplings will be planted and in the coming days only greenery will be seen there.

What is the purpose of the campaign?

The overall objective of the campaign is to promote greenery in Ladakh and enhance the beauty and balance of the environment. The entire expedition is part of a project called Green Himalayas, which was launched in the year 2021 and aims to rejuvenate the fragile ecosystem by creating green cover in the Himalayan foothills.
