Wheat Procurement 2023-24: The government is procuring wheat from the farmers at a record pace in the current season. Last year, the amount of purchases made in the entire season, this time the government has just crossed that purchase figure. The government has given official information about wheat procurement figures in the past.
Record made in a month
According to government data, procurement of wheat has so far reached 19.5 million tonnes in the current marketing year that began in April, surpassing last year’s total procurement level. The rabi marketing season starts from April every year and continues till March the next year, but bulk procurement takes place between April and June. This means that in less than a month, more wheat has been procured than the entire previous season.
Season started from 1st April
The government informed that 188 lakh tonnes of wheat was procured in Rabi marketing season 2022-23 i.e. from April 2022 to March 2023. In the current marketing season, till April 26, 195 lakh tonnes of wheat has been procured. That is, the procurement of wheat during Rabi Marketing Season 2023-24 which started from 1st April has already crossed the total procurement level of Rabi Marketing Season 2022-23.
Farmers got so much benefit
The government says that this speed in the government procurement of wheat has benefited the farmers to a great extent. During the ongoing wheat procurement operations, MSP of about Rs 41,148 crore has already been given to about 14.96 lakh farmers.
Contribution of these 3 states
According to the data, major contribution in this record procurement has been made by the three wheat producing states Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. So far this year, where 89.79 lakh tonnes of wheat has been procured in Punjab, Haryana has contributed 54.26 lakh tonnes and Madhya Pradesh has contributed 49.47 lakh tonnes.
Due to these reasons, buying increased
Due to unseasonal rains, the government has given concession to the farmers regarding quality in procurement this year. It is seen that due to unseasonal rains, the wheat crop is affected and their shine remains low. For this reason, the government has given concession on the quality front, which is the main reason for the fast purchase. The Central Government has permitted all the States to open purchase centers at village/panchayat level in addition to the already existing purchase centers for better access and also purchase through cooperatives/village panchayats/arhtiyas etc.
Adequate reserves with the government
Along with this, Kharif procurement is also going on smoothly. During the Kharif Marketing Season 2022-23, till April 26, 2023, 354 lakh tonnes of rice has been procured, while 140 lakh tonnes of rice is yet to be procured. The Kharif marketing season runs from October to September of the following year. The Food Ministry says the combined stock of wheat and rice in the central pool has crossed 510 lakh tonnes, which is a comfortable position for the country to meet its requirements.
