Can microplastics enter the brain and cause damage?

From waking up in the morning to brushing teeth, we use plastic in many ways throughout the day. From vegetable bags to food packaging, plastic is used. Along with this, plastic is also used in drinking water bottles, coffee-tea cups, plastic face masks, tea bags, wet tissues, washing powder, colors used for coloring at home and many cosmetic products. All of these contain microplastics that reach your brain as well. In such a situation, we need to understand how to avoid it.

What is microplastic?

According to the European Chemicals Agency, microplastics are any plastic fragments less than 5 mm in length. They cause pollution and disease by entering natural ecosystems in a number of ways, including through beauty products, clothing, food packaging and industrial processes.

Two types of microplastics have been identified. Primary microplastics include any plastic fragments or particles that are 5.0 mm or less in size before they enter the environment. These include clothing microfibres, microbeads and plastic pellets (also known as nardles). Other microplastics are generated by the breakdown of larger plastic products through natural gathering after entering the environment.

Sources of secondary microplastics include water and soda bottles, fishing nets, plastic bags, microwave containers, tea bags and tyres.

How do microplastics harm:

Plastic causes many damages to our body, sticks to the outer part of red blood cells and can completely break the oxygen flow, due to which there can be a decrease in oxygen in the tissues of the body. Apart from this, it also has a bad effect on the immune system. This can gradually make your body weak and your productivity gets affected. It can also be harmful for pregnant women and small children. Apart from this, it affects the lungs, heart, brain, digestive system. Micro and nano plastics can affect the structure of the human body.

What the research related to microplastics says:

According to the report published in General Environment International, scientists told that microplastics have been found in the blood of 80 percent of the people. Another thing has been revealed in the study that microplastics can roam in the human body and can harm many important parts of the body. Which has a direct effect on the mind. Scientist has expressed concern that if the situation remains the same then it can harm human body cells as well. Due to the effect of microplastic, a person can die even at a young age.

In this research, blood samples of 22 different people were taken and most of these people had PET plastic in their blood, which is commonly found in drinking bottles. It contains one-third the amount of polystyrene, which is used for packaging food and other products. Apart from this, it contained polyethylene, which is used to make plastic bags. The size of microplastic is 0.0007mm, which can easily move in the body.

In addition, a new study by a team of researchers from Austria, the US, Hungary and the Netherlands has found that nanoplastics (MNPs) can reach the brain a few hours after eating, which is dangerous because it can cause inflammation, damage to the nervous system, Defects, or may increase the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. And can slowly spoil Men’s health.

The results showed that particles with protein corona could not enter the barrier, but particles with cholesterol corona could. Knowing their basic function structure is important for managing their harmful effects.
