Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar announced the election schedule for the 224-member Karnataka Assembly elections on March 29. Voting will be held in one phase on May 10 and its results will be announced on May 13. The current term of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly will end on May 24.
Notice issued to BJP leader as well
The Election Commission of India on Wednesday (May 3) issued a show-cause notice to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s son and party leader Priyank Kharge for calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘worthless son’ during his campaign for the Karnataka elections. The Election Commission has also issued a notice to BJP leader Basangowda Patil Yatnal for calling former Congress President Sonia Gandhi a ‘Vishkanya’. The Election Commission’s action comes a day after it issued an advisory to all political parties on “decreasing level of discourse” during campaigning for the May 10 Karnataka assembly elections.
Fierce fight between parties on candidates with criminal records
Almost all parties are in the race for the assembly elections to be held in Karnataka on May 10. Many candidates in these parties also have criminal records. Now there is going to be a close fight between them. According to a report by election watch organization Association for Democratic Reforms, the Congress party has 31 per cent, BJP 30 per cent and JDS 25 per cent candidates who have serious criminal cases against them. These records are filed in the affidavits of the Election Commission of India.
According to the latest ADR report which analyzed the financial, educational, gender and other details along with the criminal background of the candidates in the Karnataka Assembly Elections-2023, 69 of the 221 candidates are from the Congress. Out of 224 candidates, 66 are from BJP. Out of 208 candidates, 52 are from JDS. Of the 208 candidates, 30 (14 per cent) are from the Aam Aadmi Party, who have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
