Indians returned from Sudan: India has ended the ‘Operation Kaveri’ campaign on Friday (May 5) to evacuate the citizens trapped in civil war in Sudan and the last Indian Air Force aircraft has returned home with 47 passengers. India launched Operation Kaveri on April 24 to evacuate its citizens from Sudan following violent clashes between the army and a paramilitary force. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar informed that with the arrival of Indian Air Force’s C130 aircraft on Friday, 3,862 people have been evacuated from Sudan through ‘Operation Kaveri’.
He said that the Indian Air Force operated 17 sorties and the Indian Navy made five sorties to take Indians from Port Sudan to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Jaishankar said that 86 Indians were brought through the countries bordering Sudan. He also thanked Saudi Arabia for hosting the Indians brought from Sudan and helping in the evacuation process. He also thanked Chad, Egypt, France, South Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Britain, America and the United Nations.
MEA Rapid Response Cell appreciated
The External Affairs Minister said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to ensure the safety of all Indians abroad is our inspiration.” Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan was present in Saudi Arabia to oversee the rescue efforts. Foreign Minister Jaishankar praised Muraleedharan for this.
Talking about Operation Kaveri, Jaishankar said that ‘appreciate the spirit, tenacity and courage of all those involved in Operation Kaveri. Our Embassy in Khartoum (Sudan) showed extraordinary dedication during this difficult time. Team India deployed in Saudi Arabia and the efforts of the MEA Rapid Response Cell, which coordinated with India, were commendable.
