Violence stopped in Manipur, curfew continues, more than 100 pieces of security forces deployed


Manipur Situation Improved: There has been a slight improvement in the situation of violence that broke out after the tribal movement in Manipur. Violence has stopped in the state, but curfew still continues in 8 districts. More than 100 companies of army and central security forces are deployed in the state to prevent any possibility of violence. 13 thousand people have been taken to safer places. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reviewed the situation.

On May 3, the All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM) organized a rally to protest against the grant of tribal status to the Meitei community in the state. After this rally turned violent, anarchy spread in the state. In Saikul of Kangpokpi district, two were killed and about 11 people were injured due to bullet injuries.

More than 100 troops deployed

So far, more than 100 companies of paramilitary forces including RAF, CRPF and BSF and Army have been deployed in the state. The Indian Air Force has used C17 Globemaster and AN 32 aircraft to fly airfields from Assam to violence-hit Manipur.

13000 people were evacuated safely

The Indian Army issued a statement on Friday saying that around 13,000 civilians have been evacuated from violence-hit areas to safer places. All of them are currently living in shelters and military posts.

The statement further added that the situation in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Moreh and Kakching is now under control and no major violence has taken place since Thursday night. Apart from sporadic incidents of arson and road blockades, people remained indoors in Imphal.

Shoot and sight last resort – DGP

Director General of Police (DGP) P Dongle said that the state home department has ordered shoot at site, but it is the last resort. He said, “If the public goes quietly, there will be no need for it.”

He cautioned the people that, “The flag march is on and the police do not behave the way the army does with the public. They are trained to fight the enemy, while the police are trained to control their own people.” are trained. So we appeal to all to stay at their homes peacefully till the situation becomes normal”
