China Censors Videos Showing Poverty: Chinese authorities are cracking down on videos showing China’s poverty on social media. This has been claimed in a report. It has been said that due to a step taken by President Xi Jinping, videos showing the misery caused by the economic situation have been removed from social media.
According to a New York Times report, a March announcement from the Cyberspace Administration of China said that anyone who publishes a video or post that intentionally manipulates grief, incites polarization, or harms the image of the party and the government will be punished. Creates harmful information and hinders economic and social development, will be punished. With this, it would be a punishable offense to show people facing economic inequality or hardship in China.
Content creator’s account banned
Such news came when a content creator named Hu interviewed a 78-year-old widow in Chengdu, the southwestern city of China. In the video, the Chinese woman is seen crying and struggling to buy rice. The report claimed that the video was later removed from social media and Hu’s account was permanently banned from two of China’s biggest video platforms.
Thread censored on the Chinese version of Quora
The report said that a thread on Zhihu, the Chinese version of Quora, was also censored, where people were seen discussing poverty in China. Such a step was taken with the aim of ensuring that the reputation of Xi Jinping’s Communist Party of China is not affected.
At the same time, the party has boosted its poverty alleviation campaign as Xi Jinping launched the ‘General Prosperity’ program in 2021. Due to which China’s comprehensive victory in the fight against poverty was celebrated.
