Uganda Indian Banker Murder: An off-duty police constable shot dead a 39-year-old Indian banker with an AK-47 assault rifle in Uganda’s capital Kampala. The AK-47 rifle with which the police constable fired was stolen. The reason behind the murder was the loan money of Rs 46,000, for which there has been a tussle between the police constable and the banker.
According to reports from Uganda, the Kampala Metropolitan Police said that Ivan Wabwire, 30, shot an Indian banker named Uttam Bhandari on May 12, after which he was arrested. According to the Kampala-based newspaper Daily Monitor, chilling footage from the crime scene showed Wabwire shooting Bhandari at close range.
Allegations of irregularities in loan amount
Kampala Metropolitan Police said Bhandari was the director of TFS Finance Services and Wabwire was his client. There was a misunderstanding between the two regarding the amount to be given by the constable to the firm. When Wabwire was informed about the loan amount of Rs 46,000 on May 12, he allegedly started an argument with Bhandari. The constable said that this figure was exaggerated by Bhandari.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Patrick Onyango told the Daily Monitor that Wabwire left behind his AK-47 rifle and fled after shooting Bhandari.
13 cartridges recovered from the spot
Police have recovered 13 cartridges from the spot. Police said that Wabwire had a record of mental disorder. Because of this, he has also been admitted to the hospital twice. After this, he was also punished for possessing a banned weapon five years ago. The report states that Wabwire, who is now imprisoned at the Busia police station in eastern Uganda. He had stolen a gun from a fellow policeman and roommate.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Geoffrey Tumusime Katsigazi met the Indian community in Uganda and assured them of their safety, reported news portal, Nile Post. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has demanded answers from security forces and questioned how an off-duty policeman obtained the gun.
