Karnataka Government Formation: Karnataka’s outgoing Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday (May 17) said the Congress’s “inability” to decide on a new chief minister soon, despite having a clear majority, reflects its internal position. He urged the Congress to resolve the issue of government formation soon.
His comment has come at a time when the process of brainstorming is going on in the Congress regarding the future Chief Minister of Karnataka. All kinds of speculations are also being made about the next Chief Minister. The Congress said on Wednesday afternoon that a decision in this regard is likely to be taken today or on Thursday (May 18). A new council of ministers will be formed in the next 48 to 72 hours in the state.
‘It reflects the internal position of the party’
Responding to the questions, CM Bommai said, “People had voted for the Congress party in the hope that the change of government would bring a lot of prosperity to the state as well as the people.” He has not yet taken any decision regarding the Chief Minister. This is their internal matter, I do not want to discuss it much.
He claimed that the ‘inability’ to elect a chief minister early reflected the position of the Congress. He said, “Despite having a clear majority, the party is unable to decide its leader. It reflects the internal position of the party. People’s aspirations are more important than politics. They (Congress) should resolve the issue of new chief minister and government formation at the earliest.
‘Community also watching’
Two main contenders are at the forefront in the race for the post of Chief Minister from the Congress. The contest is between former chief minister Siddaramaiah and state Congress president DK Shivakumar. The Congress won 135 seats in the recently concluded assembly elections, while the BJP was reduced to 66 seats. Asked how much representation the Congress can give to Lingayats, Vokkaligas and other communities in the government, Bommai said, “Let’s see what they do.”
He alleged that the country’s oldest party had tried to appease the Lingayat community ahead of the May 10 elections. He said, “Congress leaders in particular spoke a lot about Lingayats and tried to please them. Let us see what posts they will give, whether they will give the post of chief minister or deputy chief minister or minister. The community is also watching.
