Minakshi Kakati Kalita: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption of Assam Police arrested Meenakshi Kakati Kalita, Assistant Commissioner of the State GST Office, red-handed in a bribery case on Thursday (May 18). According to the news agency ANI, Kalita had accepted the bribe of Rs 4,000. During the search, the team recovered more than Rs 65 lakh from his house.

Assam Police CPRO Rajib Saikia said, “A complaint was received at the directorate, in which it was alleged that Meenakshi Kakati Kalita had demanded Rs 10,000 from the complainant to re-activate GST online functions.” ‘

Officer caught by trap

Rajib Saikia further said, “Later, the bribe amount was reduced to Rs 8,000 on behalf of the accused government official. Unwilling to pay the demanded bribe, the complainant approached the Directorate to take necessary legal action against the public servant. After this a trap was set up at Kar Bhavan (Office of the Commissioner of State GST, Assam). Meenakshi Kakati Kalita took Rs 4,000 as part of the bribe demanded from the complainant and was caught red-handed soon after. The bribe amount was recovered from his possession and was confiscated in the presence of independent witnesses.

Case registered under Prevention of Corruption Act

Rajib Saikia further said, “On receipt of sufficient evidence against the accused public servant, he was arrested by the team of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Directorate of Assam.” The official said that the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) A case has been registered against Kalita at the ACB police station. Necessary legal action is being taken in the matter. On the other hand, the team of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption has recovered Rs 65,37,500 from the house of the accused during the search. The officer said that the search is going on.
