‘Pakistan’s port city will be lost in darkness’, the government has not yet paid 150 billion


Pakistan Electricity Crisis: A Pakistani official has told a parliamentary panel about power supply shutdown in Karachi. The official said that if the government does not pay the subsidy to K-Electric, a private company that supplies electricity to the port city of Pakistan, then there will be a power failure.

The government of Pakistan gives a subsidy of Rs 10 to Rs 20 per unit to K-Electric to maintain the tariff difference. This information was given by the Secretary of Power Supply during the review of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the meeting of the Management Team.

Payment amount 150 billion rupees
The Secretary of Power Supply said that K-Electric will have to pay its tariff difference subsidy immediately. The official said that the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) had to pay Rs 20 billion as markup to K-Electric. He said that this amount has now increased to Rs 150 billion.

The official told the committee that the government had given a subsidy of Rs 10 to Rs 20 per unit to K-Electric to maintain the tariff differential and now the total liability has become Rs 150 billion.

A committee headed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is trying to sort out the issue and it is expected to be resolved by the end of June. The official said that due to lack of payment to K-Electric, the power supply would stop.

To probe committee member Senator Mushhid Hussain Syed, the secretary said people could face additional power cuts of up to two hours during the upcoming summer heat wave. In view of the possibility of heat wave across the country, the power cut will increase by two hours.
