2000 Rupees Note: The long-standing apprehensions regarding the Rs 2000 note proved true today when the Reserve Bank of India suddenly announced a big decision on the Rs 2000 note. Today, RBI has announced to withdraw 2000 rupee notes from circulation and withdraw them. The Reserve Bank has asked banks to stop issuing Rs 2,000 notes with immediate effect.

RBI said that till September 30, these notes will remain valid currency (circulation). Those who currently have Rs 2000 notes will have to exchange them from the bank.

When was the last time Rs 2000 notes printed?

The Reserve Bank of India told in the press release that in the year 2018-19 itself, the printing of two thousand rupee note was stopped.

The RBI said that around 89 per cent of the 2000 notes were issued in March 2017.

By March 31, 2023, the value of Rs 2000 notes was around Rs 3.62 lakh crore.

Out of Rs 3.62 lakh crore, only 10.8 per cent notes were in circulation.

What did Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman answer in March

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said in Parliament in March 2023 that according to the RBI’s annual report, there has been no demand for supply of Rs 2000 denomination banknotes since 2019-20. Earlier in December 2021 also, the government had told the Parliament that since 2018-19, no fresh orders have been given for printing Rs 2,000 notes, hence there has been a decrease in the number of Rs 2,000 notes.
