PM announced demonetisation
On November 8, 2016, Prime Minister Modi suddenly addressed the nation at 8 o’clock in the night and informed that after 12 o’clock the notes of 500 and 1000 rupees would be closed. After this decision of demonetisation, there was an atmosphere of chaos in the whole country. Everyone wanted to exchange their 500 and 1000 rupee notes somehow. Along with the announcement of demonetisation, the government also announced new notes of 500 and 2000.
What was the impact of demonetisation in 2016?
After the sudden announcement of demonetisation in the country, there was a rush among the people to change the notes. Long queues were seen outside the banks. RBI was also not ready to exchange notes on such a large scale, due to which suddenly there was a shortage of notes in the market. Along with this, even outside the ATM, people stood in line for hours and were troubled to withdraw money. During this, the news of the death of many people also came to the fore.
In March 2023, 7 years after demonetisation, TMC member Abir Ranjan Biswas had asked the government that how many people had died due to demonetisation in the year 2016. In response to this question, the government had said that they do not have any data regarding this. And in the year 2018, the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, while answering a similar question in the Parliament, had informed that four people had died in the country due to demonetisation. Due to the change in the size of the notes after the government’s decision of demonetisation, the ATMs also had to be changed.
2000 rupee notes can be changed till 30 September
After the year 2016, on May 19, 2023, the RBI has once again decided to withdraw the Rs 2000 note from circulation. It is also being called mini demonetisation. In such a situation, a question has arisen in the minds of the people that whether 2000 notes will not be in circulation from tomorrow, then let us tell you that those who have 2000 rupee notes can deposit it in any bank from May 23 to September 30. can be changed from At the same time, it has also been announced to keep it in operation till 30 September.
