New Parliament Inauguration: As a symbol of the transfer of power in the country, Sengol i.e. the scepter given to the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru by the last Viceroy of the British will now be kept in the new building of Parliament. This Sengol was kept in the Prayagraj Museum (Allahabad Museum) of Uttar Pradesh (UP) for about 75 years. However, so far no one had any information about this sengol correctly.

From the common citizens to the people of Prayagraj Museum itself, this sengol was known only as the personal property of Pandit Nehru. The museum also knew that it was a golden stick gifted to Pandit Nehru. At the time of the independence of the country, the company of Tamil Nadu, which made this golden stick, had informed about this to the Prayagraj Museum two years ago.

Sengol was kept in the showcase at the entrance gate of Nehru Gallery

In the Prayagraj Museum, this golden stick was kept in a showcase at the entrance gate of the Nehru Gallery on the first floor. From Pandit Nehru’s childhood photographs to models of his homes, auto biography and all the items found in gifts have been kept in this gallery. On the instructions of the Union Ministry of Culture, this Sengol was sent from Prayagraj Museum to National Museum in Delhi about 6 months ago on 4 November 2022. It was sent to the National Museum so that it could be installed in the new building of the Parliament House.

These questions are being raised about Sengol

Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed the country about this Sengol by holding a press conference on Wednesday. The question arises that why the country was not aware of the reality till now, why this information was kept hidden from the country till now, why the thing which was the property of the country was kept in the museum as the property of Pandit Nehru. Gaya, whose negligence was it and who is responsible for it, Pandit Nehru himself or his government was responsible or it was someone else’s negligence, if it was someone’s negligence then will anyone’s accountability be fixed in this?

A company from Tamil Nadu had prepared

Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of the British Empire, at the behest of King George, prepared this scepter ie Sengol from a company in Tamil Nadu and handed it over to the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. This scepter was given to Pandit Nehru as a symbol of transfer of power. Pandit Nehru had got it kept at Anand Bhawan, the ancestral residence of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Sengol was shown as a golden stick

After the country’s independence in 1947, when Pandit Nehru came to lay the foundation stone of the new building of Prayagraj Museum, he had announced that all the items kept in Anand Bhavan would be given to Prayagraj Museum. At that time, in the list handed over to the Prayagraj Museum in Lucknow, Sengol was shown as the golden stick of Pandit Nehru. There is sure to be controversy and politics on this in the coming days.
