Turkish Presidential Election 2023: Another round of voting is going to take place for the first time for the presidential election on Sunday, May 28 in the Islamic country Turkiye (Turkey). Votes were also cast here on May 14, but then no candidate got more than 50% votes, which led to the run-off round. Incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan faced a tough challenge from his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the first phase of voting.
Kemal Kelikdaroglu is a 74 year old former bureaucrat. He is considered as “Gandhi of Turkey”. The local media calls him ‘Gandhi Kamal’. He wears spectacles just like Mahatma Gandhi, like him the political style is also polite. He was fielded against Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the presidential election by the Republican People’s Party (CHP), the main opposition party in Turkey.

In the first round of voting, he could get only 49.52% votes. Because of which Erdogan is pushing again. Tomorrow i.e. on May 28, there will be voting once again.

While Erdogan’s image in Turkey is that of a strict Islamic leader, Kemal Kelikdaroglu has now been identified as ‘Gandhi of Turkey’. Kamal adopted the method of Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt Satyagraha movement there. He attracted the attention of the people by raising his voice against the autocracy of President Erdogan by walking a distance of 450 kilometers from Ankara to Istanbul. Similarly, he emerged as a big leader of the opposition.
