S Jaishankar Meets Tariq Ahmad: Lord Tariq Ahmed, British Minister of State for Foreign Commonwealth and Development Affairs, who is visiting India, met Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Monday (May 29). His visit is from 27th May to 31st May. During this, strengthening of relations between India and Britain was discussed.
Jaishankar asked Tariq Ahmed, who was visiting India, to ensure the security of India’s diplomatic missions in Britain and stop the misuse of democratic freedoms. During the meeting with Lord Ahmed, Minister of State for Commonwealth and Development, Jaishankar also raised the issue of vandalism in London by Khalistan supporters. Regarding this incident in March, the Union Home Ministry had handed over the investigation of the attack on the Indian mission in London to the National Investigation Agency after a meeting with the British representatives.
India was the UK’s 12th largest business partner
Jaishankar said that he discussed with the visiting minister a range of issues ranging from free trade agreements and South Asia to the Indo-Pacific and the G20. So far nine rounds of talks have taken place between India and Britain regarding the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
India and the UK have been negotiating an FTA since January last year. Its goal is to consolidate a comprehensive agreement. According to UK government data, India was the 12th largest trade partner in 2022, accounting for 2.1 percent of the UK’s total trade.
