SCO Summit India 2023: India is going to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit virtually. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) gave this information on Tuesday (May 30). However, the reasons for holding the summit in virtual mode were not given. Last year the SCO summit was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. in which the prime minister Narendra Modi (PM Modi), Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and all the top leaders of the group participated in person.
India assumed the presidency of the SCO at the Samarkand Summit on 16 September last year. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that under the first presidency of India, the 22nd Summit of the Heads of State of the SCO Council will be held in virtual mode on July 4, which will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India hosted the foreign ministers of the SCO for a two-day conference in Goa earlier this month.
Which countries were invited?
The Ministry of External Affairs said that all the member states of SCO – China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, have been invited to participate in the summit. Apart from this, Iran, Belarus and Mongolia have been invited as observer countries. As per SCO tradition, Turkmenistan has also been invited as the guest of the chairmanship.
The Ministry of External Affairs said that heads of six international and regional organizations have also been invited to the summit. These organizations are the United Nations, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), CSTO, EAEU (Eurasian Economic Union) and CICA.
What is the theme of SCO summit this time?
The theme of the summit is ‘Towards a SECURE SCO’. Which means security, economy and trade, connectivity, unity, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and environment. The SCO was founded in 2001 at a summit in Shanghai by the presidents of Russia, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
