Nepalese Royal Massacre Story: On June 1, 2001, 9 members of Nepal’s royal family were shot in their own palace. The shooter was none other than the son of the king of the same royal family, who would become the heir to the throne in the coming times. The story is not as simple as it appears. The massacre that took place at the Narayanhiti Palace on June 1, 2001 left many questions unresolved. Many conspiracy theories were born from it, such as whether the agencies of other countries were behind the murder of the royal family? Was Prince Dipendra killed before the massacre? Where were the security guards of the royal family when the shots rang out? The biggest question is what was the reason for this massacre? Let’s try to find answers to all the questions.
The story of the June 1st massacre
First the story of the massacre of June 1, 2001. 22 years ago a party was going on in Tribhuvan Sadan, the royal palace of Nepal. In which more than a dozen people of the royal family including Maharaj Birendra and Maharani Aishwarya were present. Yuvraj Dipendra was heisting the party. According to reports, Dipendra was quite drunk and in a drunken state, he was taken to his room. Around 8 pm, Dipendra suddenly came out of the room. Dipendra was wearing military uniform and was wearing black gloves in his hands. He had an MP5K submachine gun in one hand and a Colt M-16 rifle in the other and a 9 MM pistol in his uniform.
Dipendra looked at his father Raja Birendra and pressed the trigger of the submachine gun. The members of the royal family tried to save themselves but within minutes the dead bodies of many members of the family were lying there.
After firing, Dipendra went out of the room towards the garden and his mother Maharani Aishwarya and Dipendra’s younger brother Nirajan ran after him. Dipendra also riddled him with bullets. After which Dipendra shot himself in the head near the pond outside the garden. However, even after this firing, the breath of Maharaj Birendra and his murderer son Dipendra was going on. Along with him, the rest of the injured were also taken to the hospital, but Maharaj Birendra Singh Bikram Shah Dev could not be saved. Whereas, Dipendra’s breath was going on.
After 14 hours of this massacre, the next day on June 2, the people of Nepal were informed about the death of Maharaj Birendra Bir Bikram Shah at around 11 am and his own murderer son Dipendra was declared the king. However, till then the people of Nepal were not told how the members of the royal family died.
Nepal abandoned the monarchy and adopted the path of republic.
Yuvraj Dipendra never regained consciousness and he also died on June 4, 2001 at 3.40 am. After the death of Dipendra, Gyanendra, the younger brother of Nepal King Birendra, became the third king of Nepal within three days and before he became the king, an unconscious person remained the king of Nepal for 3 days. However, the monarchy of Nepal could never emerge from this setback and Nepal abandoned the monarchy and adopted the path of republic.
What was the reason for the massacre?
The question arises whether the whole world knows the story of the massacre, is it true or is it something else? First of all, let us try to know that what was the reason for this massacre at the hands of Dipendra? In an interview given to BBC, Maharaj Birendra Singh’s cousin and Dipendra’s aunt Ketki Chester exposed this secret.
Ketki Chester was present at the party on the night of the massacre but her life was saved. Ketki Chester told the reason for this massacre was an incomplete love story. In fact, Yuvraj Dipendra was studying in England from 1987 to 1990 and during that time he met Devyani. According to reports, both fell in love.
Devyani has a special relationship with the Scindia family of India. Devyani’s mother Usha Raje Rana is the daughter of Rajmata Vijayraje Scindia of Gwalior and sister of Madhavrao Scindia. That is, in a way, Devyani’s mother is Jyotiraditya Scindia’s aunt.
carried out the massacre
Devyani’s mother Usha Raje Rana married Pashupati Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana, a Nepali politician belonging to the Rana dynasty. Devayani is his daughter. According to Ketki Chester, Dipendra wanted to marry Devyani but his father Birendra did not approve of this relationship. On the other hand, Devyani’s family also did not approve of this relationship. Not only this, Dipendra was not even getting the money he wanted to spend and he was also threatened to be evicted from the royal family if he married Devyani. Due to which Dipendra was very disappointed and because of this disappointment, he carried out the massacre.
conspiracy theories
This is the official version of the massacre. Let’s also talk about the conspiracy theories surrounding it. The first theory indicates Dipendra’s uncle and Maharaj Birendra’s brother Gyanendra and who was made Maharaj after this massacre. Actually Gyanendra was not in that party at that time. However, his son Paras and other family members were present in that party. Surprisingly all of them were saved in this massacre. After which the rumor arose that Gyanendra and Paras together carried out this massacre.
Eyewitness army personnel had made this claim
This rumor got air from an eyewitness. In 2008, a junior army staff posted on duty in Rajmahal itself, whose name was Lal Bahadur Lamteri. He made a shocking disclosure in front of Nepali newspaper Naya Patrika. Lamteri told that Yuvraj Dipendra had already died before the massacre of the royal family. According to him, he had seen Dipendra’s dead body before the murder. Dipendra was hit by 6 bullets in the back and one bullet on the left arm. If Dipendra was already dead then who opened fire on the royal family? Lamteri says that Maharaj Gyanendra’s son Paras was in the party that night and he got the royal family and Dipendra killed through a person. The person who killed all of them was wearing a mask exactly like Dipendra. This theory also gained air because after the death of Yuvraj Dipendra, his post-mortem was not done and the doctor of the royal family was not allowed to meet him during the treatment.
Where were the security guards?
The next question regarding the massacre is that when the shots were fired in the palace, where were the ADC’s deployed in the security of the royal family. Why didn’t they run towards the spot even after hearing the gunshots when all these people were present only 150 yards away from the incident, from where it would have taken them only 10 seconds to reach. Later on the basis of the report of the inquiry committee, 4 ADC’s were dismissed.
‘Girija Prasad Koirala could not reach the party’
Chakra Bastola, the then Foreign Minister of Nepal, after the death of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala in 2001 in 2010, had claimed that the PM (Koirala) was also invited to the evening party of the royal family’s massacre but he did not turn up. were found, due to which his life was saved. He said that the PM was also to be targeted in this massacre.
A conspiracy theory also points to the role of the Indian intelligence agency RAW and the American intelligence agency CIA in this massacre. In fact, one year after this massacre, on June 6, 2002, an article by Nepal’s underground Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai was published in the Kantipur newspaper. In which it was said that the whole incident was a ‘political conspiracy’. In this article, citing the increasing closeness of Nepal’s royal family with China, RAW and CIA were targeted in the massacre. However, soon after the publication of this column, three editors of the newspaper were arrested.
many questions still remain
In 2009, Nepal’s former Palace Military General Bibek Shah wrote a book titled ‘Male Dekheko Darbar’ (The Palace, Who Saw) and claimed that India was possibly behind the massacre. Another leader from Nepal, Pushpa Kamal Dahal (who used to be a Maoist leader at that time) also claimed that there was a conspiracy of RAW behind this massacre. That is, the overall thing is that 9 members of the royal family were murdered and even after 22 years of this murder, many questions regarding this massacre are still standing.
