9 Indians trapped in Libya released, arrangements being made to bring them back soon


Indian Sailors Release: Nine Indian sailors stranded in Libya for the last five months have been released. The credit for the release of these sailors is being given to the efforts of two prominent persons. These include Tabassum Mansoor, principal of the Indian International School in Benghazi, and Nagulkham Jathom Gangte, India’s ambassador to Tunisia. He has played an important role in the release of Indian sailors by negotiating with the Libyan rebel group. Now arrangements are being made to bring these sailors to India. 

As per India Today report, all the Indian sailors stranded in Libya were part of the crew on board the Maya-1 ship from Cameroon. The ship belonged to Greek company M/s Redwings Shipping SA and crashed near Janjour area of ​​Libya. Following the incident, the crew was taken into custody by Aj Jawiya, a local armed group based near Al Maya Port in the city of Jawiya. The Cameroonian-flagged ship of a Greek company was on its way from Malta to Tripoli carrying oil products.

Five out of nine sailors from UP 

Out of nine Indian sailors released from Libya, 5 are from UP. While one each belongs to Rajasthan, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat. The Indian Embassy immediately took up the matter with the Libyan authorities. Along with this, demanded to send Indian sailors to India as soon as possible.

Please tell that Tabassum Mansoor, who worked for Indian citizens in Libya, held talks with the rebel group. He was persuaded to release these sailors. After release, all the sailors are returning to their homes, where their families have been waiting for them for months. On May 31, 2023, all 9 Indian citizens were released. They have reached Tripoli, where the ambassador in Tunisia met them. They have been put up in a hotel there till their exit visa formalities are completed.
