Concerned about expensive air travel, the government gave instructions, airlines should prepare a mechanism for fair air fare

High Airfare: The central government has asked the airlines to rein in the expensive air fares. In the meeting with the airlines companies, the government has asked the airlines to prepare such a system so that the wild increase in airfare can be stopped. In fact, after the cancellation of flights on the routes on which GoFirst used to fly, a tremendous increase in airfare is being seen.

A meeting of the Airlines Advisory Group was held under the chairmanship of Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia regarding expensive air travel. In this meeting, the Civil Aviation Minister has expressed his concern over the huge increase in air fares. In this meeting, the airlines have been asked to self-monitor the air fares of those routes whose air fares are witnessing a tremendous jump. Especially the routes where GoFirst used to fly.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has asked the airlines to prepare such a system in which air fares can be kept low. Along with this, DGCA will also monitor the air fare. Apart from this, the ministry has instructed the airlines to keep a close watch on the pricing of air tickets on humanitarian grounds during the disaster, so that the air fare of flights from the disaster-affected region can be kept under control.

On 3 May 2023, Go First announced the cancellation of its flights. The holiday season had begun. But after this decision of Go First, there was a tremendous increase in air fares. After the train accident in Odisha, there was a jump in air fares. The airlines of the government had to give a warning.

The issue of arbitrarily increasing air fares of airlines companies has been continuously arising. Recently, the Standing Committee of the Parliament had expressed its concern regarding this in its report. In its report, the committee had recommended the government to impose a cap on the upper and lower limit of air fares. The committee said in its report that when the demand increases due to lack of aircraft, there is a tremendous jump in air fares. The committee, in its recommendation, said that the Ministry of Civil Aviation should find a way to fix the upper and lower limit of air fares so that airlines can neither sell air tickets cheaply nor charge exorbitant fares. Last year, on August 31, 2022, the government had again handed over the right to fix air fares to the airlines.
