Railway Budget 2023: Indian Railways spent more than one lakh crore rupees on safety measures between 2017-18 and 2021-22. It has been learned from the official document that during this period there was a cost-effective increase in the expenditure on the repair of the track.
Government sources also indicated that the Railways would soon reply to the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) report. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge cited the report to attack the Center in the wake of Friday’s train accident in Odisha’s Balasore that left 275 dead and over 1,000 injured.

Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to PM Modi saying, ‘The horrific train accident in Indian history in Balasore, Odisha has shaken the entire country… Rail is the most reliable and cheapest means of transport for the people.’ He alleged that many such decisions of the government have been taken in the meanwhile, due to which the rail journey has become unsafe and the problems of the public have increased.
Expenditure of more than one lakh crore rupees
Data from the document shows that from 2017-18 to 2021-22, the Railways spent over Rs one lakh crore on Rashtriya Rail Suraksha Kosh (RRSK) works. In February 2022, the government extended the validity of RRSK for another five years from 2022-23.
8,884 crore for track repair in 2017-18
It has been said in the document that the statistics of track repair show that there has been a continuous increase in expenditure on this during 2017-18 to 2021-22. The expenditure on track repairs has increased from Rs 8,884 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 13,522 crore in 2020-21 and Rs 16,558 crore in 2021-22.
It said that the Railways spent a total of Rs 58,045 crore on track repairs during this period.
