Why do I have nightmares

Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Linked to Bad Dreams
Rapid eye movement (REM), a phase of sleep, can cause rapid eye movements, irregular heartbeat, and increased breathing. Harvard researchers said that nightmares occur when the duration of REM is long. There can be many other reasons for this. Stress, anxiety, irregular sleep, consumption of medicines, mental disorders can also be the cause of scary dreams. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has also been found to be a cause.
PTSD may increase risk
It is quite normal to have nightmares after physical abuse, sexual abuse or an accident. Its risk has been seen more in people with PTSD. It also depends on mental health. People suffering from problems like bipolar disorder, depression or schizophrenia are more likely to have nightmares. Stress-reduction techniques and therapy may reduce the risk of nightmares.
