Afghanistan Child Labor: The head of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Afghanistan has warned about the increase in the number of child labor in the country. A meeting was organized by the United Nations to talk about serious issues like increasing child labor in Afghanistan.
Ramin Behzad, head of the International Labor Organization (ILO) at a United Nations meeting in Afghanistan, said that between 2020 and 2021, 10 lakh 60 thousand children are working in the country, whose age is between 5 and 17 years.
19.5 million children in Afghanistan
Sharafuddin Sharaf, head of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Works (MoPW), said that more than one million children are doing hazardous work across the country, according to Tolo News. Apart from this, about 20 lakh children are doing different types of work. There are 19.5 million (1 crore 95 lakh) children in Afghanistan.
Out of these 1 crore 14 lakh go to school. Although 78 lakh children are not going to school due to increasing poverty and economic problems in the country. 12 lakh children are involved in dangerous activities. Sharaf Hamidi, head of the national union, said children are facing hardships in the country, some of them working for more than 15 hours.
‘Our children are working for more than 15 hours in 24 hours’
Sharaf Hamidi, head of the National Union of Afghanistan, said that no one should work more than 35 hours in a week, but the truth is that our children are working more than 15 hours in 24 hours. UNICEF Afghanistan tweeted that 1 out of 5 children in the country are involved in child labor.
The target of UNICEF is to completely eliminate child labor from Afghanistan. International aid to Afghanistan was cut after the Taliban government came to power, and $9.5 billion of the country’s assets abroad were confiscated.
