Congress chalks out strategy for Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra, can field candidates on these seats


Loksabha Election 2024: As seat-sharing talks continue among the three allies of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi for the 2024 general elections, the Congress, which is part of the MVA, plans to contest 29 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, where it believes that A strong candidate or party can help the MVA win. Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats.

But as per our internal discussion, we have identified at least 29 seats in the state where we believe the party has a strong candidate. A senior Congress leader and former minister told The Indian Express, there are about seven to eight seats where a candidate contesting on the Congress symbol will bring positive results for the party.

Party sources confirmed that the Congress wants to contest at least eight of the 10 seats in Vidarbha, said a leader. “Within the MVA, it is only the Congress which has a strong and winnable presence in Vidarbha across the region. This has been a Congress bastion and we are confident that the tide is slowly turning in our favor in the entire region.” No final decision has been taken yet.

In Vidarbha, in talks with the MVA, the party is likely to push for Amravati, Buldhana and Ramtek seats, which it currently does not hold. A Congress leader from Amravati confirmed to The Indian Express that the party has started preparations to contest the seat.

“Amravati is one of the strongest districts for the Congress in Vidarbha. There is no reason why he should not contest from here. We have identified the candidate and we will contest this seat at any cost. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena is at stake on all three seats and the Congress will have to hold talks with the Shiv Sena (UBT) and exchange some seats in other parts of the state, including Mumbai.

On Tuesday, party’s AICC in-charge HK Patil held a meeting with the core committee of the party’s state unit, where Lok Sabha constituencies were discussed. Two weeks ago, the party held a two-day session at its headquarters, where 41 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats were discussed.

Six Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai and one seat in Chandrapur were not discussed then. The party will meet again on June 16 to continue the discussion and take inputs from the workers. State Congress President Nana Patole said that all the three parties in the MVA have decided to consider optional qualification as the only criteria and the final discussion will be held on the basis of that. NCP state president Jayant Patil, however, clarified that Amravati is with the NCP and workers there want the party to contest its elections.
