Ben Stokes told why Stuart Broad was selected in the first test: England captain Ben Stokes revealed that Stuart Broad’s dominance over David Warner in earlier matches was a major factor in his selection for the first Test of the Ashes series starting on Friday. During the 2019 Ashes campaign, Warner was troubled by Broad’s balls in every way. Broad dismissed Warner seven times in 10 innings, due to which he averaged less than 10 in the series.
When asked whether Stuart Broad was selected because of his excellent figures against David Warner. In response, Ben Stokes said, ‘If I say no, I will lie.’
The English captain compared Broad’s dominance over Warner to Indian spinner R Ashwin’s record against him. Stokes said, what the Ashes bring, it is so difficult to look back at someone like this. It’s also hard to look back at Jimmy and ‘Robo’, he has been incredible in all circumstances since last year. We are very happy with the team that we have selected.
Warner showed signs of form during his 43 in the first innings of the World Test Championship (WTC) final last week and vowed to be more aggressive against Broad than he was four years ago.
Australian captain Pat Cummins also expressed confidence that eventually Warner would dominate Broad one day. Cummins said, “I am sure he has thought a lot about it. Davey (Warner) will have his own plans. I am sure you will see Davey more aggressive this time.”
