Monsoon Concern: Farmers are waiting for monsoon to sow Kharif crops in this Kharif season. But the delay in monsoon is affecting the sowing of paddy, pulses and oilseeds. Monsoon has knocked late in Kerala and due to delay in monsoon, the whole country has received 53 percent less rain than normal. At the same time, the delay in monsoon is giving vent to the concerns of El Nino, which was already being feared. So the delay in monsoon is increasing the concern on the front of inflation.
Delay in sowing of Kharif crops
Sowing of paddy, pulses and oilseeds has been delayed for more than 12 days in most of the agricultural sector, due to which the apprehension of reduction in yield has already started to be expressed. The yield of soybean can be affected the most because it requires the most water for its cultivation. Sowing of pulses is done after the onset of monsoon when there is more than 2 inches of water in the field.
Worry over delay in monsoon
Central India, which is the main center of agriculture, is deficient in rainfall by 55 per cent. There is a deficiency of 61 percent in the southern regions and 23 percent in the eastern and northeastern regions. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted a normal monsoon this year, while weather forecaster Skymet has predicted a deficit in rainfall in the main agricultural areas till the first week of July. In its forecast, Skymet said that northern and central India may receive less rainfall this year. Many other research reports believe that this year, due to the effect of El Nino, drought-like conditions may arise, due to which the production of food grains may decrease.
Risk of inflation due to delay in monsoon
Only last week, foreign brokerage house Deutsche Bank said in its estimate that till now the rainfall is 53 per cent less than normal. Sowing of Kharif crop is getting delayed due to delay in South West Monsoon. The brokerage house believes that if the fears of El Nino turn out to be true, then there is a danger of inflation due to delay in monsoon. The effect of weak monsoon can be seen on the sowing of Kharif crops. The biggest impact of deficient monsoon can be on the cultivation of paddy, the most important kharif crop. Due to El Nino, there may be drought in the country due to which there may be pressure on the supply of food items. And this can have an impact on the prices of food items. Food items can be expensive.
