In the recent past, Raghuram Rajan has been the target of Union ministers, spokespersons of the ruling party at the Centre. Recently, in a research paper, Rajan had expressed his concern about the central government’s production-linked incentive scheme in view of increasing mobile phone exports from India. He said that the PLI scheme only emphasizes on assembling of mobile phones and not on manufacturing. Rajan said that more imports are being done than exports. He said that mobile phones are not being manufactured in India even in small numbers.
Union Information Technology Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar wrote on Linkedin that the things written in the research paper are based on false facts. Because whatever electronic product is being imported, it is being done only for the production of mobiles. He said that Rajan has absolutely no understanding of smartphone manufacturing with electronics manufacturing.
