Pakistan: A local court in Bahawalpur, Pakistan, has sentenced 22-year-old Christian youth Noman Masih to death on charges of blasphemy. Human rights organizations are expressing their displeasure after the court’s decision. The religious minorities there say that a fair investigation has not been done in their case.

According to ANI report, Noman Masih is accused of having objectionable pictures against Islam in his mobile phone, after which he has been sentenced under the blasphemy law. Let us tell you that according to Section 295-C of the Penal Code of Pakistan, there is a provision of mandatory death sentence on the charge of blasphemy.

Minorities are targeted

Although what is the condition of religious minorities in Pakistan, it is not hidden from anyone. Minorities are being targeted in Pakistan every day. Here false accusations of blasphemy are often used to settle personal vendettas, property disputes, religious prejudice or business rivalry. Prominent minority rights activist Joseph Jansen expressed his disappointment over the death sentence and said that there should be an impartial inquiry into the matter.

Minority organizations demanding fair investigation

He said that often cases of false allegations against religious minorities are seen. In most cases, there is a lack of fair investigation. He said that this leads to further misuse of blasphemy laws and puts the lives of innocent people at risk.

Various human rights organizations have reacted strongly to the verdict. According to the report, human rights activist Ilyas Samuel hoped that the High Court would intervene in the matter. and will consider the death penalty. According to a report, at least 57 cases of alleged blasphemy have been registered in Pakistan from January to May 2023. At the same time, maximum 28 cases were registered in Punjab, while 16 cases were registered in Sindh, 8 cases were registered in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Along with this, five cases were registered in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir area.
