Five people were killed when armed assailants attacked two villages in Lamu County in southeast Kenya on Saturday (June 24), police said. The attackers also burnt houses during this period. The police have termed the incident as a terrorist attack.

The Lamu region of Kenya has faced frequent attacks. Lamu is near Kenya’s border with Somalia and al-Shabaab fighters frequently carry out attacks in the area in an effort to pressure Kenya into withdrawing troops from Somalia. Police said a group of assailants attacked Salama and Juhudi villages in Lamu on Sunday morning.

An eyewitness told AFP that al-Shabaab jihadists killed five civilians, some of whom were beheaded. The attack took place on Saturday evening around 7:30 pm.

Al Shabaab, an affiliate of the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, has been fighting for 15 years in Somalia to topple the central government and establish its rule. Kenya first sent troops to Somalia in 2011 to combat terrorists linked to al-Qaeda and is now a major participant in the African Union’s military campaign against the group.

Kenya has faced several retaliatory attacks during this period, including the 2013 terror attack at Nairobi’s Westgate Mall that killed 67 people and the 2015 Garissa University attack that killed 148 people.
