‘Business is very slow this year’, cattle traders await buyers in Srinagar ahead of Bakrid

Jammu and Kashmir News: Every year before Eid-ul-Azha, a trader from Rajasthan, Ashiq Mohammad, comes here with sacrificial animals and sells them within a few days and goes back home. However, this year due to high prices due to the apathy of the buyers, their wait is increasing. Mohammad said that I have been coming here for five years. Business is very slow this year. People want to buy these animals, but due to rising prices, the purchase is not happening like before.

‘Most animals not sold’

He said that in the past years my animals were sold in two days. This year it has been five days and most of the animals have not been sold. Some traders in the animal market said that they were selling their animals at a loss. Mohammad Shafi, a resident of Handwara in Kupwara, said that he had brought about 35 domesticated animals to sell in the hope of getting better prices.

‘I’m at a loss’

Shafi said that in the last two days, I have sold only eight to 10 animals. Business is slow this year. The buyers do not have enough money to buy the animal. Abdul Majeed, a cattle trader from Lolab area of Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, said that I had brought 50 sheep from my hometown to sell here. I bought them at Rs 330 per kg and am selling them at almost the same price. Because of this I am incurring losses.

The festival of Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated on Thursday. The tradition of offering sacrifices on this festival began centuries ago when Prophet Ibrahim agreed to sacrifice his son Ismail in the name of Allah.
