Tomato prices doubled due to delay in summer and rain, record hike in just one month

Tomato Price Increased: The effect of hot weather is now visible on the pockets of common people as well. During the last week, the prices of tomatoes doubled in many parts of the country. The price of tomato in the retail market had increased from Rs 80 to Rs 120 per kg. On the other hand, the wholesale price of tomato has increased from Rs 30-35 per kg to Rs 65-70 per kg.

The record increase in the price of tomatoes has happened due to many reasons. However, this increase is mainly due to excessive heat, delayed rains and less interest of farmers to do farming. Tomato prices fell to Rs 3-5 per kg in May due to several factors such as high heat, late rains and lack of interest among farmers in growing the crop, as per ET report. Was

Tomato prices doubled in last two days

Tomato trader Ashok Ganor of Delhi’s Azadpur wholesale market said that the prices of tomatoes have doubled in the last two days. The supply of tomatoes has reduced from neighboring states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Now we are taking tomatoes from Bangalore. He said that the tomato plants on the ground have been damaged during the recent rains. Due to the loss in tomato, farmers have also stopped taking care of this crop.

Farmer forced to destroy crop

To reduce losses from low prices, farmers stopped tending tomato fields. Ajay Belhekar, a farmer in Maharashtra’s Narayangaon region, said farmers did not spray pesticides or use fertilizers because the rates were not remunerative. Due to this the outbreak of pests and diseases increased and production declined. In such a situation, farmers could not recover the cost of harvesting and transportation of tomatoes due to falling prices. Due to this, the farmer was forced to throw his produce or remove the crop by running a tractor in the middle of the crop.

Due to this the prices can be reduced

It is expected that the prices may come down in the coming week, as tomato cultivation is about to start again from many new places. On the other hand, if there is heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh and other places, then the prices may remain stable.
