AIMPLB Against UCC: The stir regarding the Uniform Civil Code has intensified. Meanwhile, Maulana Muhammad Fazal-ur-Rahim Mujaddidi, general secretary of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), has said that protection of Muslim personal law in the country and stopping any law affecting it is one of the main objectives of the board. That’s why the board has been opposing the Uniform Civil Code since its inception.

He said that unfortunately the government and government organizations raise this issue again and again. The Law Commission of India had sought opinion on the subject in 2018 as well, the Board had filed a detailed and reasoned reply, stating that the Uniform Civil Code is against the spirit of the Constitution and also not in the national interest. Rather, there is a fear of being harmed by it.

What did Maulana Muhammad Fazl-ur-Rahim Mujaddidi say?

Maulana said, “I strongly object to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), it will shatter the pluralistic structure and diversity of our country and will be contrary to the religious freedom given in the constitution. This will not benefit the country, but will harm national unity. Therefore, the Uniform Civil Code should not be implemented at all and it is appropriate to remove Article-44 of the guidelines of the Constitution.

Maulana further said that after this it was announced that at present there is no need for Uniform Civil Code, but unfortunately the Law Commission has again issued a notice to the public on June 14, 2023, asking for opinion regarding Uniform Civil Code and filing reply. Time has been set till 14 July 2023 for this.

The statement further said that the board has been active in this regard since the beginning, the board has written a letter to the commission expressing displeasure that only one month’s period has been fixed for such an important issue. Therefore this period should be extended for at least 6 months. Along with this, the board has also prepared a detailed reply in consultation with renowned and expert jurists of the country for filing its reply.

In which all aspects of the Uniform Civil Code have been clarified and the possible damage to the unity and democratic structure of the country has been presented. Along with this, a brief note has also been prepared on the website of the Law Commission for filing replies and showing your stand against the Uniform Civil Code.

The General Secretary also said in his statement that a delegation of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board would soon personally meet the Law Commission Chairman and try to clarify the situation.
