Uniform Civil Code Row: The BJP on Tuesday (June 27) targeted the Congress and other opposition parties for criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stand on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The BJP said that it is enshrined in the constitution as a directive principle of state policy and the Supreme Court also has a ‘decision’ in this regard.

The Congress on Tuesday attacked PM Modi for strongly advocating the UCC and said that he should first talk about poverty, price rise and unemployment in the country.

Reacting to PM Modi’s comment regarding UCC, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said that the Prime Minister can say anything but he will have to answer the real questions of the country like unemployment, price rise and Manipur. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) said that the Prime Minister should not make such issues a tool of politics.

BJP’s reply to opposition parties on UCC

Criticizing the opposition parties, Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav said, “It (UCC) is written in our constitution. In Article 44 of the Constitution, it has been mentioned as a Directive Principle of State Policy. There is also a decision of the Supreme Court in this regard.

He told a press conference in Delhi, “There should be no discrimination. There should not be any discrepancy. The right to justice should be ensured to all, including those who are exploited, deprived and oppressed in the society. There should be equality in the society.

On opposition parties accusing the BJP of trying to create division among Muslims by wooing the Pasmanda Muslim community, Yadav said they should be ashamed of doing nothing for the exploited, deprived and oppressed sections of the society .

Attacking the opposition parties, the BJP leader said that there are extremely backward classes among the backward classes and those who are doing vote bank politics in their name have never paid attention to them. He said, “When the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Under the leadership of BJP, it is trying to change the lives of the exploited and the deprived, so why does it bother the opposition?’

He said, “They (opposition parties) should be ashamed because they have never done anything for the OBCs (Other Backward Classes). Pasmanda community also comes under OBC. The Pasmanda community is being ignored for a long time.

Strongly advocating for Uniform Civil Code during a program in Bhopal, Prime Minister Modi said that the Constitution also mentions equal rights for all citizens. PM Modi also said that BJP has decided that it will not follow the path of appeasement and vote bank politics.

He alleged that the opposition is using the issue of Uniform Civil Code to mislead and incite the Muslim community. The Prime Minister said that Pasmanda Muslims are backward but due to vote bank politics, they are not even treated equally.
