Politics Over Uniform Civil Code: Prime Minister Narendra Modi After K’s statement on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Bhopal, a war has again erupted between the ruling and opposition parties on this issue. Leaders of many opposition parties including Congress, JDU, AAP have raised questions on this. BJP also left no stone unturned to retaliate against the opposition. In such a situation, politics is in full swing regarding the issue.
1- Referring to the UCC, PM Modi said on Tuesday (June 27) in the program ‘Mera Booth, Sabse Sambharat’ organized in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, “We are seeing that people are being instigated in the name of Uniform Civil Code.” The work is being done. If there is one law for one member in a house and another for another… then will the house be able to run? How will the country be able to run with such a dual system?”
2- After this statement of PM Modi, the opposition is completely attacking the Modi government at the center. Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram tweeted, “While advocating for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the Prime Minister equates the nation with a family. This comparison may seem correct on a general look, but The reality is very different. A family is bound by blood ties, while a nation comes together under a constitution, which is a politico-legal document.” He said there is a lot of difference between the two.
3- Talking about the Aam Aadmi Party, the party says that in principle it supports the UCC, but a consensus should be made by discussing with all religious sects. AAP leader Sandeep Pathak said, “In principle we support Uniform Civil Code. Article 44 of the Constitution also supports it. Article 44 says that there should be UCC but this issue is related to all religions, so stake Consensus should be made with the holders. The government should hold wide consultations on this proposal with all stakeholders including political parties and non-political organizations.”
4- The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) also held a meeting on Tuesday (June 27) to discuss the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). After the meeting, AIMPLB has written a letter to the Law Commission seeking six months time to give its opinion. President of Darul Uloom Deoband Arshad Madani also gave his reaction regarding PM Modi’s statement. He said, “BJP wants to take away the religious freedom of Muslims and that is what is happening.”
5- Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) welcomed Modi’s advocacy on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and said that with its help discrimination against women should be removed in the country. VHP working president Alok Kumar said, “Article 44 of the Constitution allows the government to make efforts to have a Uniform Civil Code for the country at the earliest.” He also criticized the opposition parties and Muslim groups for objecting to the UCC proposal.
6- On the other hand, on AAP’s support on UCC, Akali Dal leader Dr. Daljit Cheema has called Arvind Kejriwal double minded. He said, “AAP leader Sandeep Pathak’s statement has exposed the real face of Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal is not different, he is also like BJP.”
7- JDU’s national spokesperson KC Tyagi said, “His party and Nitish Kumar are not opposing the Uniform Civil Code. We want that everyone should move forward on UCC by meeting and consulting but BJP is playing tricks. BJP Making UCC an issue because 2024 Lok Sabha Elections is close.
8- In the midst of all this, the BJP has also left no stone unturned to give a befitting reply to the opposition. Rajnath Singh hit back strongly at the opposition for besieging the Modi government on the issue of UCC. The BJP said, “We had said that the Uniform Civil Code will be implemented. Opponents are talking about Hindu and Muslim on this. Should politics be done by dividing the society? Can’t we do politics by taking the society and the whole country together? If someone is a Muslim, if he wants to do his religious work, will we not allow him to do so?”
9- The Defense Minister said, “Why are we being accused? Is there not Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in it? Is there no Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in the Constituent Assembly? Is Babasaheb not Bhimrao Ambedkar? Why is Modi ji being stigmatised? Shouldn’t there be one country-one constitution? Shouldn’t there be a law in the country?’ Respect for women is our commitment. Be it a woman belonging to any caste, any creed, any religion.”
10- Apart from this, on behalf of the Samajwadi Party, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman Burke, SP MP from Sambhal, UP, said on this issue that even after the government changes anything, the Muslim will remain on his religion. He said that UCC will worsen the situation in the country. He claimed that Muslims are being threatened to move here, the country does not belong to anyone’s father. At the same time, BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi targeted the opposition and said, “The time has come to free the UCC from these ‘communal craftsmen’ as it is not for any particular community, but for the whole society.”
