Chhattisgarh News: The Sitapur assembly seat in Surguja district of Chhattisgarh came into existence in 1951 after independence, but since then till today the BJP, which is running its government in many states across the country, has not been able to win elections from here. The BJP, which dreams of winning this seat, has faced a crushing defeat from the Congress every time. Congress has hoisted the flag of victory a dozen times in Sitapur Assembly, which is considered to be the safest seat for Congress in Surguja division, while three independent candidates have reached the assembly by winning from here. This seat has many records and political equations. Which are the secrets of success for Congress.
Tribal Oraon community dominated this seat, when elections were held for the first time in 1951, then two independent candidates Cheetu Ram and Haribhajan were face to face in the election. In this election, Chituram got 7 thousand 7 hundred 41 votes. While Haribhajan got 9 thousand 2 hundred 84 votes. And in this first election, Haribhajan defeated Chituram by a margin of 1800 votes. After this, in the very next election, the Congress gave ticket to Haribhajan, who had won the last election as an independent, and Haribhajan reached the assembly once as an independent and for the second time as a Congress MLA. Ramkhilavan and Professor Gopal Ram have also been elected as Independent MLAs once each from Sitapur Assembly.
Two record MLAs of four terms each
In Sitapur, one of the two reserved assembly in Surguja district, the Oraon community has always been dominant. For the last four times, even though the MLA is not a resident of this assembly, but coming from the Urao community, the caste equation remains with him. Apart from sitting MLA and cabinet minister of Chhattisgarh government, Amarjit Bhagat, Congress’s Sukhiram has won the election four times. Amarjit Bhagat is the MLA from this seat from 2003 to 2023. Whereas Sukhiram continued to win from this seat from 1972 to 1985.
