Dutch Government: The Dutch government has banned the wearing of hijabs, Christian crosses, Jewish yarmulkes and other religious symbols for on-duty police officers in a bid to promote neutrality. The Dutch government says that due to this new law, there will be a common feeling in the minds of the public regarding the uniform.
According to the British daily The Times, Dutch Justice Minister Dilan Yesilgoz said in a letter to MPs that I do not think that the expression given to any religion or belief is the right thing for officers in uniform. He said that these are the people who represent the government and are forced to use force if needed.
The decision came after the demand to increase neutrality
This decision of the Dutch government has come after the demand from the right-wing parties to increase the neutrality regarding the uniform of the police. Clarifying the fairness of the Dutch police uniform, Dutch Justice Minister Dilan Yesilgoz said that the word uniform says it all. It should always be the same with a police officer on the street. I don’t think direct expression of religion or belief is appropriate for uniformed officers.

Commenting on the banning decision, Dutch Justice Minister Dilan Yesilgoz said that these people represent the government and are obliged to use force if necessary. The minister said that those wearing headscarves are still welcome in the police department. He said that they should appear neutral when they come in contact with the public.
