Suicides In Singapore: Singapore has recorded the highest number of suicide cases in the last 20 years. There has been an increase of about 26 percent in the case of suicide last year. Which is its highest level in two decades. Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) has informed about this.

According to the report, last year i.e. in 2022, 476 people committed suicide across the country. In which most of the people were those who were struggling with family problems, employment and financial difficulties. SOS has claimed that youth in the age group of 10-29 and elders in the age group of 70-79 have committed a large number of suicides. Which is very worrying.

Suicide cases are increasing due to these reasons

According to the report, the elderly have mostly committed suicide due to loneliness, family problems and health related ailments. According to the SOS report, a total of 476 persons have committed suicide in 2022, which is the highest number of suicide cases recorded since the year 2000. In the year 2021, a total of 378 cases of suicide were reported.

Psychiatrist also expressed concern

Experienced psychiatrist and mental health consultant Jared Ng has said in a conversation with Channel News Asia that it is very sad to see an unprecedented increase in the number of suicides in Singapore. These figures paint a picture of the invisible mental distress prevailing in our society, especially among our youth and elders.

It has been said in the report that for the fourth consecutive year, the cause of death of children and youth of 10-29 years was suicide. In fact, only 33.6 percent of people of this age have committed suicide in Singapore. Last year, a total of 125 people of this age group have given their lives. In the year 2022, 476 people committed suicide in Singapore. Of these, 317 were men, 159 were women.

Data released by the World Health Organization

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among people aged 15-29 globally. SOS Chief Gaspar Tan said that suicide is a complex issue, which arises due to mental health challenges, social pressure and economic uncertainties. WHO says that every year more than 700,000 people die by suicide worldwide.
