Court seeks reply from minor wrestler in case against Brij Bhushan Singh, hearing to be held on August 1

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh Case: The Delhi court sought response on the report filed by the police to quash the case registered against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the outgoing president of the Wrestling Federation of India for alleged sexual harassment of a minor wrestler. The court has sought this answer from the victim and the complainant. The prosecution lawyer gave this information.

Additional Sessions Judge Chhavi Kapoor issued notice to the victim/complainant during the in-camera hearing. The court directed him to file a reply on the police report by August 1. The court will next hear the matter on August 1.

What did the Delhi Police say?
The Delhi Police had filed a report in the court on June 15, requesting the cancellation of the case registered against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. In this, six female wrestlers were accused of sexual harassment and stalking. Under POCSO, there is a provision of a minimum jail term of three years, depending on the type of crime committed.

The police had recommended the cancellation of the complaint filed by the minor wrestler against Singh citing that there was no corroborative evidence. In a statement issued by the police, it was said that the police has submitted a report based on the statements of the complainant (the minor’s father) and the girl herself.

What decision can the court take?
The court can decide whether to accept the closure report of the police or direct further investigation. They suspended their agitation after the government had earlier assured the agitating wrestlers, including Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Olympian Vinesh Phogat, that a charge sheet would be filed by June 15.

They were demanding Singh’s arrest for allegedly harassing seven female wrestlers, including a minor, but BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has denied all the allegations.
