India on China’s BRI: India once again refused to support China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) at the SCO summit on Tuesday (July 4). A statement issued at the end of the conference said that Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have reiterated their support for the BRI.

Prime Minister at the summit Narendra Modi highlighted the need to promote connectivity, but stressed that while making such efforts it is necessary to respect the basic principles of the SCO Charter, especially the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states. Apart from Russia, China, Pakistan, leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran took part in this meeting organized through digital medium under the chairmanship of India. In this, the member states also considered it important to ensure the implementation of the SCO Economic Development Strategy 2030, adopted with the aim of promoting cooperation in the areas of digital economy, high technology and modernization of existing international routes for road and rail transport.

Referring to Afghanistan, Prime Minister Modi said that India’s concerns and expectations regarding Afghanistan are similar to most of the SCO countries. We have to make joint efforts for the welfare of the people of Afghanistan. He said that India and the people of Afghanistan enjoy age-old friendly relations and in the last two decades, we have contributed immensely to the economic and social development of Afghanistan.
The PM said that it is necessary that the land of Afghanistan is not used to spread instability in neighboring countries, or to encourage extremist ideologies. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) includes India, Russia, China, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It is considered an important economic and security group.
