Uniform Civil Code Issue: The Law Commission has given time till Friday (July 14) to give opinion to religious organizations and people on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that all MPs from the southern state came together in Parliament against the Uniform Civil Code.
According to news agency PTI, CM Vijayan said that various caste and religious groups were not consulted regarding the UCC. The UCC is also a matter of concern for the minorities. He said this in a meeting of state MPs called in Thiruvananthapuram in view of the monsoon session of Parliament starting from 20 July.
What did Pinarayi Vijayan say?
Vijayan said that Kerala is a model state for the country in terms of secularism, so we should take a unanimous stand on the UCC. Taking decisions on personal laws in a hurry without proper consultation is not good in a democracy.
He said that when faith and equal participation of all sections is necessary for unity, UCC should not be brought in to create fear in the minds of minority groups. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin has also opposed the UCC in the southern state.
Stalin said that I am writing to express Tamil Nadu government’s strong opposition to the idea of implementing UCC in India, which is known for its multicultural fabric. I also understand the need for some reforms, but I believe that UCC poses serious threats and challenges to the diverse social structure of our society.
What is the government saying?
Prime Minister recently Narendra Modi Had said in Bhapol that the opposition is provoking people on UCC for vote bank. UCC was even mentioned in the constitution. Many times the Supreme Court has also said that bring UCC.
