The interior of the Durbar Hall of the palace is made of gold and gilt. Jai Vilas Palace, built in 1874, is spread over 12 lakh 40 thousand 771 square feet. It has four hundred rooms. One crore rupees was spent in the construction of this palace built 146 years ago. It took 12 years to build Jai Vilas Palace with the help of foreign artisans. The museum was started in the year 1964 in this palace. Forty rooms were converted into a museum by Vijayaraje Scindia.
The Durbar Hall built on the second floor of the palace is called the pride of Jai Vilas. The walls and ceiling of the Durbar Hall were completely decorated with gold-diamonds-gems. The world’s heaviest chandelier has been installed on the ceiling of the Durbar Hall. Before hanging the chandelier weighing three and a half thousand kilos, the artisans tested the strength of the ceiling. For this nine to ten elephants were made to stand on the roof. Elephants kept roaming on the roof for ten days. When the roof was sure to be strong, then the artisans of France hung this chandelier on the roof.
