Hailing from a Paridat family in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, Veeramuthuvel is an alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (Madras) and holds a Ph.D. As the project director of the lunar mission, Veeramuthuvel has replaced Vanitha, who succeeded the then ISRO chief K.K. She was the project director of the Chandrayaan-2 mission led by Sivan.

Vanitha was the first woman to hold this position in the history of ISRO. Mayilsamy Annadurai was given the title of ‘Moon Man of India’ after leading the first Chandrayaan mission.
