13.5 crore people out of poverty line in 5 years of Modi government, data released by NITI Aayog


India Poverty Data: During the 5 years of the Modi government from the financial year 2015-16 to 2019-21, 13.5 crore people have been successful in coming out of poverty. This figure has come out from the data of NITI Aayog. On Monday, July 17, 2023, NITI Aayog has released a report titled National Multidimensional Poverty Index: A Progress Review 2023 (National Multidimensional Poverty Index: A Progress Review 2023) on the poverty line. According to the report, between 2015-16 and 2019-21, the number of persons with multidimensional poverty has decreased from 24.85 percent to 14.96 percent.

Reduced poverty in villages

According to the report, the maximum number of poor has decreased in rural areas. The number of poor in rural areas has come down from 32.59 per cent to 19.28 per cent. Poverty in urban areas declined from 8.65 per cent to 5.27 per cent during the same period. Among all the states, maximum reduction in the number of poor has been seen in Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, 3.43 people have been able to come out of the poverty line during this period. After Uttar Pradesh comes the number of Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Rajasthan.

Improvement seen on these fronts

According to this data of NITI Aayog, improvement in nutrition, increase in school year, improvement in cleanliness and availability of cooking gas have helped in reducing poverty. National MPI measures health, education and standard of living in 12 SDG-related indicators. These include nutrition, child and adolescent mortality, maternal health, years of schooling, school attendance, cooking gas, sanitation, drinking water, electricity, housing, assets and bank accounts. And according to the data, improvement has been seen in all.

Poverty reduced due to Modi government’s schemes

NITI Aayog said in its report that the major focus of the government has been on sanitation, nutrition, cooking gas, financial inclusion, clean drinking water and electricity, due to which this success has been achieved on the poverty reduction front. Due to flagship schemes like Poshan Abhiyaan and Anemia Mukt, healthcare needs have been made available. According to the report, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has changed the lives of people. Apart from this, other schemes of the Modi government like Saubhagya, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, PM Jan Dhan Yojana and overall education have also reduced poverty in the country.
