Princess Diana’s sweater: The Black Ship sweater of the late Princess Diana of Wales is up for auction. It will be auctioned in New York in September this year. This special sweater made of red and white checks is expected to sell for more than $50,000. It is being claimed that it will be auctioned in Sotheby’s online fashion icon sale.
Designed by Sally Moore and Joanna Oborne, this sweater was worn by Princess Diana on several occasions. The special thing is that the late princess wore it even during her engagement to the then Prince Charles. In fact, Princess Diana was photographed wearing the sweater at a polo match in June 1981 when she was 19 years old. As soon as Princess Diana’s sweater picture went viral, she became a style icon.
Later, the designers received an official letter from Buckingham Palace stating that there was some damage to Princess Diana’s sweater. Also, the designers were asked whether it can be repaired or replaced. This shows how dear this sweater was to the princess.
Designers had to give new sweater
The old sweater was then returned on demand from Buckingham Palace, showing damage to one sleeve. The designers speculated that the damage may have been caused by Princess Diana’s diamond and engagement ring. A new sweater was then knitted and sent for the princess, which Diana wore to an event in 1983 with white jeans and a black ribbon tie. The auction house has expected the bid for this prized jumper to go from Rs 41 lakh to Rs 65 lakh.
Sotheby’s said it will be displayed at Sotheby’s New York showroom from September 7-13, while online bidding will open on August 31 and run until September 14.
