Sunil Gavaskar on WTC Final: In June, the Indian team played the final of the World Test Championship against Australia, in which Team India, captained by Rohit Sharma, had to face a crushing defeat by 209 runs. India’s performance in the final was nothing special. Most of the batsmen and bowlers of the team appeared unsuccessful. Now former Indian veteran Sunil Gavaskar has raised serious questions on Team India in the WTC final.
Speaking to ‘Indian Express’, Gavaskar said, “The question the selectors and the board should ask is ‘Why field first in the WTC final? Well, at the time of the toss it was explained that it was cloudy. The question then should be, you didn’t know Travis Head’s weakness against the short ball? Why was the bouncer used when he had scored 80?
The former Indian legend further added, “You know, when Head came out to bat, in the commentary box, we saw Ricky Ponting saying, ‘Bounce him. Put the bounce. Everyone knew about it but we did not try it. Mind you, if I was in the commentary box, I would never tell anyone about the weakness of an Indian player. This is where the selection committee should call both the captain and the coach and ask, ‘Hello, what happened?
Except Rahane and Siraj almost all failed
Apart from Ajinkya Rahane in batting and Mohammad Siraj in bowling from India, no player could please with his performance. Rahane scored 89 in the first innings and 46 in the second innings. Apart from this, Siraj took 4 wickets in the first innings and 1 wicket in the second innings while bowling. The rest of the team could not perform as was expected of them. This time Team India had lost the WTC final for the second time in a row.
